Blue Spirulina - Where does Blue Spirulina come from?

Blue spirulina actually comes from... believe it or not, green spirulina (Spirulina platensis) which is a blue-green algae. This amazing bright blue colour comes from a phytochemical called phycocyanin. Phycocyanin is extracted from Green Spirulina and simply named Blue Spirulina.

  • Eye Health
    • In some studies phycocyanin has shown potential in protecting against oxidative stress related issues such as senile cataract, age-related macular degeneration, uveitis, premature retinopathy, keratitis, and ocular inflammation.
  • Heart Health
    • May reduce issues caused by oxidative stress such as arterial hypertension and possible heart failure.
  • Wound Healing
    • Phycocyanin has wound healing, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties along with the In-vivo fluorescence imaging ability.
  • Anti-Cancer
    • “It has been reported phycocyanin exerted antineoplastic activities in breast cancer cells through regulating MAPK signaling (Jiang et al., 2018). Meanwhile, Liao et al. performed in vivo and in vitro investigations and found that phycocyanin induced apoptosis and autophagy of pancreatic cancer cells (Liao et al., 2016). In addition, phycocyanin is discovered to exert anticancer functions in multiple cancer cells including melanoma (Hao et al., 2018a), chronic myeloid leukemia (Subhashini et al., 2004), cervical cancer (Li, Gao, Zhang, & Chu, 2006), lung cancer (Hao et al., 2018b), and colon cancer (Wen et al., 2019), etc.” More studies are needed for conclusive evidence.

  • Immune System
    • In other research it is also suggested that spirulina may also help to balance the immune system
  • Anti-oxidants
    • The bright colour is a symbol of high antioxidant levels, and that is exactly what Phycocyanin is all about! Phycocyanin is a strong fighter against free radicals
  • Blood Pressure
    • We observed that A. maxima and C-phycocyanin reduced CKD-related causes of hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, renal dysfunction and oxidative stress in the kidney and heart. In conclusion, A. maxima or C-phycocyanin could be used to delay CKD because they prevent the progression of CKD and the associated cardiovascular complications.
  • Kidney Disease
    • One study showed that Phycocyanin may prevent the progression and complication of chronic kidney disease.
